Stories and stepping stones.

Dear friends and members of St. Matt's,
Today has been a full day. And a varied day. Even in this strange time, that's one of the great gifts of the work I get to do - every day is different. And there are two pieces that came up for me today that I want to share with you.
First, this morning, I was laying out a few supplementary readings for our Virtual Group that begins on 5/24. We'll be tackling Rachel Held Evans' last book, Inspired. And I'm pulling together a little background and supplemental reading to fill out the vivid pictures Rachel is painting. In the first part of the book, she reflects a lot on stories - and specifically stories of origin. She suggests that it's never just the facts that make the story - that make us who we are. Instead, it's the other stuff: the way we tell the story, the language, the implications, the events that happen between the lines. For example - what if you celebrated a child's birthday by simply reading them the information on their birth certificate? Would that be enough to tell the story of that day? Or do you, when you tell a story like that, want to share the details, the feelings, the laughter, the pain and joy? Rachel suggests it's the whole story - the specific language, the way we tell the story that makes it meaningful. And she's right.
Tonight, our Confirmands will start to think about specific moments or stepping stones in their faith journeys. While they're still weaving parts of their origin stories, there have been moments of growth and transformation in each of their lives. And two of our Mentors will share pieces of their stories, moments that helped to define them and their faith. Because stories matter. And each one of our stories weaves together into the great story of God.
What were those moments and stepping stones for you? Which moments have defined you? And where have you seen God at work in between the lines, in between the facts, particularly as you look back - what fills out your story? You and your story are part of the story of God's love. If you haven't told that story in a while, you might consider doing that. I'd be happy to hear it - and I'm sure others would, too. In some ways, our stories are even more important now, while so much seems different and changeable.
Please be in touch if you need anything. Join us for Bingo Night on Saturday. Tune in for Compline and Morning Prayer. Connect with our fellowship and education opportunities. And know that the staff and I are here to support you. God bless you and keep you.
Faithfully,
--Marissa +
