Barth, Willimon, and Hauerwas Online
A Message from Marissa: Reading Barth Together
On Tuesdays in May, there will be an opportunity to participate in an online learning experience that is not affiliated with St. Matt's. Stanley Hauerwas and Will Willimon will be engaging together in a Zoom room explaining and exploring the work of Karl Barth. Those three names merit some introduction, so read a little more below.
The theological lenses of Barth and Willimon are rather different from ours as Episcopalians. But Hauerwas is close to a traditional, faithful anglican lens. There is a lot to learn here, if you're able to follow along. If you decide to listen in, a group of us from St. Matt's will gather online to debrief each session on Thursdays at 2pm.

Karl Barth was a Swiss Reformed theologian who is considered one of the greatest contributors to systemic theology. He's studied by seminarians all over the world and has had a profound impact on the church broadly. He's often matched up against (or alongside) Karl Rahner who differs in approach quite a bit. (Rahner is actually one of my favorite theologians, but this deep dive into Barth is still a good opportunity!)
Will Willimon is a professor at Duke Divinity School and a Bishop in the United Methodist Church. Stanley Hauerwas was also a professor at Duke and he's often referred to as the greatest living Christian ethicist.
