Dear friends and members of St. Matt's,
I know for many of you this will be a busy night - and the rain only makes it more complicated! I hope there are many wonderful memories made. For the rest of us, who might have a little less pirate, ghoul, and unicorn spirit on this day, I hope the rain is causing you to look ahead - as it is for me. These dreary, rainy fall days always seem to push me towards the light and warmth of the winter holidays.
At St. Matt's, there are quite a few things coming up on the horizon. Tomorrow night (11/1), we'll gather for Evening Prayer at 6:30 for the Feast of All Saints. We'll remember those in the parish who have passed in the last year as well as loved ones of yours who you carry with you. I hope you'll consider bringing a small picture or token of someone(s) to help you remember. We'll incorporate those loved ones into our worship and prayers in this short, tender service that promises new life after death.
On Sunday, Confirmands will sign the Journey Book, committing themselves to this year of learning. They don't commit themselves on Sunday to being Confirmed in May - but rather commit themselves to digging deeply into their faith and our tradition this year. And then we'll have our first Mentor & Confirmand gathering of the year.
Our Parish Intern, Meg, is also teaching the first part of a series on Sunday about Radical Discipleship. This three part series will meet after church on Sundays beginning this week (11/3). You can read more about that in our newsletter if you haven't seen it yet.
And next week, I'd like to invite you to a Vestry Update in between services. You might remember that we committed at the Annual Meeting to regular communication about the finances & life of the parish. We had our first update in June - and this will be the second as we make our way to the end of the year. Please join us on Sunday 11/10 at 9am in the Lounge for this conversation. All are welcome!
This coming Sunday, the Gospel passage is one of my favorite stories. It's the story of Zacchaeus, the Chief Tax Collector in Jericho who finds a pretty creative way to see Jesus. There's a terrible (and sort of cute) little song that I learned in Church School as a kid, I suspect some of you may remember it. If not, I'll spare you! It's tricky to get it out of your head once it's in there...
Please take a careful look through our e-news this week. There are a lot of ways to be involved in mission, fellowship, adult formation, youth, and church school over the next few weeks. Join us for the fun as we make our way to those warm, winter holidays. You'll be in my prayers until we're together again.
Faithfully,
--Marissa +
