About St. Matthew's
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church was founded in 1802 when the Town of Wilton was established. The first building was dedicated in 1819. In 1863 during the Civil War a larger, stone church was built, and in 1940, a parish hall was added. By the 1960s our congregation had continued to flourish and it was necessary to expand once again. It was at this time that we built our larger complex on New Canaan Road. Our rector, The Rev. Mary Grace Williams wrote a bit about our past recently.
When you first walk into St. Matthew's you will find an amazingly vibrant community consisting of young and old, from retired seniors to newborn babies, young adults, youth and children everywhere. We are members of The Episcopal Diocese Connecticut in The Episcopal Church which is part of the Anglican Communion.
Worship is at the heart of who we are as Episcopalians. The Holy Eucharist is celebrated every Sunday (at 8:00am and at 10:00am). Upon entering worship, you will be handed a Sunday worship bulletin outlining the Order of Worship by an usher. We use The Book of Common Prayer as well as The Hymnal 1982 as well as other supplemental texts and music authorized by The Episcopal Church. Children are welcome in worship and leave during the first part of the service for Christian education, to rejoin the congregation at The Peace so they can participate in Holy Communion. Our services are led by many people in addition to the clergy (priests): young people serve as Acolytes, readers of lessons from the Hebrew Scripture (Old Testament) & New Testament, Lay Eucharistic Ministers assist with the distribution of communion (bread & wine), and our choirs (children, youth and adult). Greeters welcome everyone each Sunday as you cross the threshold into our church and Ushers invite you as you enter the Sanctuary. Behind the scenes, the Altar Guild prepares the Chancel (altar area) for worship and the Flower Guild designs our beautiful floral arrangements.
In addition to worship, St. Matthew's is very active in reaching out in the community through a variety of Outreach initiatives. Fellowship is also important to us as we seek fun and companionship on our faith journey through a variety of small groups, church-wide events, and study.
Our facility is unique in that St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church and Wilton Presbyterian Church each have our separate sanctuaries (worship space), but we share the common areas of the Parish Hall, offices and rooms for church school. While separate worship for the two congregations reflects the uniqueness of each tradition, the ecumenical focus of our relationship is manifested in the joint children’s and adult Christian Education programs, youth groups and other special events. This partnership enriches all of us and in our joint venture is overseen by members of both congregations, the Wilton Episcopal Presbyterian Corporation (WEPCO).
